Whilst it is always best to consult a medical practitioner for help with any health problems, home aromatherapy can help you heal some common ailments, as well as boosting your well-being. Probably the most noticeable effect of using aromatherapy at home is its ability to de-stress both mind and body.
Those who practice this art have found that it can help with stress and anxiety-related disorders, muscular and rheumatic pains, digestive disorders, menstrual and menopause problems as well as insomnia and depression. Research through various studies seems to back this up by showing that certain smells affect certain problem areas.
Valerian, neroli and nutmeg can lower blood pressure; lavender oil can shorten decision making-time; peppermint can improve the ability to perform demanding, visual tasks, whilst floral fragrances double learning speed and the smell of vanilla relieves panic.
Because the molecules in essential oils are so small they are absorbed through the pores into the bloodstream during massage. It is believed that fragrance also works on the part of the brain concerned with emotional responses, memory, intuition and the sex drive. This may explain why aromatherapy affects the moods.
The chemicals in essential oils appear to act in a similar way to drugs, albeit slower and more sympathetically with fewer side effects
