With the approach of Spring/Summer people start being more active, taking up various sport and leisure pursuits. Whether its golf or simply tidying the garden after winter, many will 'throw' themselves straight 'back' into action without any preparation or warm-ups. The result of all this activity can lead to the nations leading cause of disability - Back Pain!
Here are some simple facts about back pain:
- 40% of all adults suffer from back paid (16 million) in anyone year.
- 2.5 million suffer pain every day
- 119 million working days are lost each year because of back pain
- There are 14 million GP consultations over back problems each year
- The NHS spends £480 million treating back pain

50% become chronic sufferers
- Only 20% seek medical advice
- It is one of the hardest problems to diagnose and treat
Many of the causes of back pain can be related to poor designs in the work place, bad/poor posture, 'soft lifestyles' and a lack of exercise.
Before starting any form of physical activity (including the gardening) take time out to warm up, take it steady and if exercising build your programme slowly. |
