Hyperactive symptons
During Infancy
  • Crying, screaming, restless, some need very little sleep
  • Colic sufferers.
  • Difficult to feed either by bottle or breast
  • Cannot be calmed, pacified or cuddled - dislikes affection Dribbles excessively
  • Drinks a lot - is always thirsty
  • Cot rocking, head banging, fits and tantrums
In older children (in addition to the symptoms of infancy)
  • Clumsy, impulsive, accident prone
  • Erratic or disruptive behaviour
  • Always wanting to touch
  • Constantly on the move
  • Disturbs or upsets other children · Might be aggressive
  • Could be withdrawn and lacking concentration

  • Chocolate
  • Orange/Blackcurrants
  • Tomatoes
  • Eggs
Recommendations
  • Avoid allergens pre-pregnancy, during pregnancy and your child up to 5 years old
  • Do not give eggs, nut products, cows milk, wheat/gluten, soya, citrus fruits or fish to any baby before they are at least 6 months old
  • Recent research suggests that Ritalin should be used only as a last resort even though it has proven to be widely successful in helping hyperactive children
  • Cutting out monosodium glutomate (found in many fast foods) will also help. However always check with your GP before cutting anything out of a diet .
Useful supplements to consider
  • Evening Primrose - an essential fatty acid
  • For brain function - zinc and iron are the two most important minerals. Zinc in particular is needed for chemical changes in the body. This helps growth, heal wounds, eyes and the pancreas as well as having many other nutritional functions.
  • Vitamin B12 - helps the mental state
  • Vitamin B6
  • For pre-pregnancy - Folic Acid
  • For nerves, muscles etc - magnesium
  • And for the whole body, most importantly, vitamin C
Tricks of the Trade
  • To calm an hyperactive child who has come into contact with an allergen simply brew a pint of camomile tea. Once cooled add it to a warm bath together with a few drops of lavender essential oil or a vaporiser.
