Questions about children's drinks
Should I stop giving my child fruit juice?

No - Fruit juice plays a useful role in your child's diet and contains vitamin C. Just restrict it to meal times and make sure it's well diluted (5 parts water to 1 part juice). Also, check the label as some ready-to-drink fruit drinks are mostly water and sugar. I think my child's allergic to cow's milk.

Should I change to a soya drink?
Allergy to cow's milk is not as common as people think, affecting fewer than 2 children in 100 between the ages of one and five years. Excluding milk from your child's diet can harm his or her growth so always get advice from a State Registered Dietician (though your GP). Many children grow out of their milk allergy by the time they start school.

Are sugar-free squashes safe to give to my child between meals?
Sugar-free drinks usually contain artificial sweeteners and are not designed for babies. If you give them to young children, dilute them to at least one part squash to ten parts water.

Is it OK to give my child tea or coffee?

Giving tea of coffee to young children reduces their absorption of iron and it not recommended. If you do give them tea or coffee make sure it is not at meal times and that it is very weak, containing lots of milk but no sugar.

My child keeps asking for sweets and fizzy drinks! What can I do?
Sweets and fizzy drinks contain many nutrients and may take away your child's appetite for more nutritious foods. If you don't give them regularly your child won't expect them and you'll avoid tantrums.
