Here are a few useful tips to ensure you have a healthy, happy holiday:
- A simple precaution is to always wash your hands before eating, handling food and after going to the toilet.
- Drink bottled water or boil or sterilise water with sterilizing tablets if you have any doubts.
- Make sure the bottled water containers are sealed, as in some countries they re-fill used bottles with local tap water.
- Stay away from ice in drinks unless you are sure it has been with treated water.
- Be careful when choosing food, particularly if it seems to have been kept warm for long periods of time.
- If you buy ice cream try to make sure it is from a reliable source.
- Unpasteurised milk should always be boiled before using.
Be careful with shellfish, in particular uncooked ones such as oysters.
- Keep medicines in your hand luggage rather than packing them in your suitcase.
- Carry a list of your medication with the proper names and doses.
- When swimming in pools, lakes, rivers or the sea avoid swallowing the water as it may be contaminated.
- During the hottest part of the day avoid full sun exposure and vigorous activity.
- Drink plenty of safe, non-alcoholic liquids to prevent perspiration and dehydration.
-
If disabled always check in advance that the airline, your destination and hotel are suitable for your particular disability.
- A wheelchair, if used, should be lightweight, foldable and easily repaired.
