Tips on preventing DVT
We have been hearing a great deal about DVT - Deep Vein Thrombosis - in the news recently and of the concern about the number of deaths it is reported to have contributed to. Known more commonly, and mistakenly, as "Economy Class Syndrome", DVT is thought to occur when poor circulation contributes to the formation of blood clots. The jury is still out on what the real causes are and whether we should be seriously worried about this. However, if you are due to travel a long way and are concerned about the possibility of DVT then consult your GP before departing. As yet DVT has not been associated with all long distance travelling, but whether you are going by plane, coach or car here are a few tips to help alleviate the risk during the journey:
  • Once seated try to stretch even whilst seated, lifting your arms above your head, then bringing them down again slowly.
  • To aid circulation in the legs rotate your ankles regularly.
  • If you have restricted mobility in your lower limbs, either manually move your legs or ask someone to assist you by moving them to stimulate circulation.
  • Don't remain in a cramped position - stretch Stand and walk at least every two hours if you can
  • Drink plenty of bottled water or soft drinks
  • Steer clear of alcohol especially on long hauls as air travel dehydrates the body and alcohol dehydrates it further
  • If travelling in a car make regular stops, get out and walk around
