What are free radicals?

Free radicals are highly reactive atoms or fragments of molecules presenting an electron imbalance. They only live for fractions of a second but are continually formed, and if they are not instantly neutralised by antioxidant substances they launch an attack on the membranes.

Smoking, smog, alcohol, medicines, radiation, stress, etc. are all factors conductive to the formation of free radicals and are consequently harmful to the body. Intensive physical activity also increases the formation of free radicals; however, if practised in a regular, planned way it increases the body's antioxidant defences which, as scientific research demonstrates, become more effective if supported by supplements of some vitamin complexes or specific antioxidant substances.
