Why you should love Brussel Sprouts!

6 Reasons to Eat this much maligned veg………

You may not have liked them as a child but as a grown-up there’s no excuse not to eat these nutrient-packed greens!  Here’s why…….

1)                 Rich in Vitamin C sprouts help strengthen the immune system to ward off winter colds.

2)                 Sprouts also contain Vitamin K which is vital for healthy bones and speedy wound healing.

3)                 Important for pregnant women or those planning to conceive, a 100 gram portion of sprouts gives you more than half of the recommended intake of folic acid.

4)                 Being one of the top fibre-rich vegetables, a 100 gram portion of sprouts contains nearly as much fibre as four slices of wholegrain bread.

5)                 Sprouts are particularly rich in cancer-fighting nutrients known as ‘indoles’, which are released when sprouts are cooked.

6)                 Another compound found in sprouts is ‘sulforaphane’ that also appears to have anti-cancer properties.  Studies have suggested that this compound is most effective against breast and colon cancer.

Top Tip – If you find sprouts give you wind try adding a few caraway or dill seeds when cooking which should eliminate the problem.
