Here are a few helpful tips to help you make those dietary changes:
1) Base each meal on starchy carbohydrate foods, such as bread,
potatoes, rice, pasta and chapatti - but choose wholegrain ones wherever
possible.
2) Eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables each
day. 1 portion = 2 tablespoons vegetables, 1 whole fruit (e.g. apple,
banana) or 2-3 small fruits (e.g. plums or Satsuma's), 1 small bowl of salad, 1
small glass of fruit juice.
3) Eat more pulses such as baked
beans or red kidney beans
4) East fish, especially oily fish
types (including tinned) such as salmon, mackerel, pilchards, trout etc at
least once or twice a week.
5) If you have red meat choose
leaner cuts and cut down on the amount of fatty meat products you eat e.g.
pies, pastries, burgers and sausages.
6) Wherever possible opt for
lower fat dairy products e.g. skimmed or semi-skinned milk, low fat
yoghurts and reduced fat cheese.
7) Don't fry - grill, steam,
poach or microwave foods. 8) Finally be sensible about alcohol. If you must
drink keep within a low limit.
Remember cholesterol is only one of the
factors that can cause heart disease. Others are smoking, blood pressure,
weight, lack of exercise and stress.
