To say salt is sinister is rubbish. You need a certain amount of salt in your diet for the good of your heart. Recent studies have shown that men who were on low-salt diets (that's less than 2000mg per day or just under ½ a teaspoon) had four times as many heart attacks as those who ate 3 times as much salt. The finger is pointed at a hormone in the blood called Renin. It seems that this hormone kicks into action when the kidneys detect low blood levels of salt. Renin narrows the blood vessels, reducing the bloodflow, which may increase the risk of heart attacks. So remember that whilst too much salt is not good for you, neither is too little.
