Sugar
What foods do you go for when you are lacking energy, depressed, and before, during or after a workout? What foods do you crave when you're not doing anything in particular? The chances are you'll turn to sugar. Our body's need two teaspoons of blood sugar at anyone time in order to function properly. This can quite easily be taken in through the normal digestion of complex sugars, brown rice, pasta etc as well as from protein or fat.

One of the biggest problems is the amount of "hidden" sugar in pre-prepared and processed foods. Even so-called health foods, particularly those that boast a low fat content, often contain alarming amounts of sugar. A well-known breakfast bran cereal has 22% sugar and a famous diet drink is 61.9% higher in sugar than many brands of sweet biscuits and cakes. Sugar is a major disrupter of healthy eating. It's high in calories and is linked to diabetes, obesity, heart disease, migraines, low immunity, skin disorders, yeast overgrowth (candida) and, of course, tooth decay. Sugars, whether brown or white, supply only empty calories with no nutritional value at all. It doesn't matter whether its sucrose, fructose, glucose, lactose or maltose. It's a complete fallacy that one type of sugar is better for you than another. The only difference is that when they are eaten in their natural form, such as fructose in fruit, they can supply many necessary vitamins and minerals as well as energy.

Are you a Sugarholic?
If you answer "No" to three or more of these questions, you may well be sugar sensitive or addicted to the stuff.
  1. I never have cravings for cakes, chocolates, sweets, soft drinks or biscuits.
  2. I can go for a day or so without eating any of the above.
  3. I can always stop after eating one sweet or biscuit or a single piece of chocolate. I can have a cupboard full of sweet snacks and not eat them.
  4. I rarely drink soft drinks. II never add sugar to tea, coffee, cereal or strawberries and raspberries.
  5. I don't automatically reach for something sweet to finish off a meal.
  6. There are times when I don't have any sweet treats in the house.
