Tomatoes are tops
* It's not just lycopene in tomatoes that is beneficial. Whilst lycopene is the most studied ingredient others, such ascarotenoids and other antioxidants are also of benefit. Vitamins A & C, potassium and folate, also found in tomatoes, are all necessary for optimal health

* In Italy tomatoes are the second best source of Vitamin C after oranges. In Belgium however, because tomato consumption is low, tomatoes are not considered to be of a significant use to health.

* Researches believe that different plant chemicals boost each other's benefits. For example, where lycopene is alone ii is not thought to be as beneficial as it is when other plant chemicals exist alongside it, such as Vitamins C or A. Therefore it is better to intake something like a tomato which has a number of beneficial chemicals working together, rather than to take it as a single plant chemical. For example, as a lycopene supplement.

In order to get the best out of nature eating a combination of tomatoes, other vegetables and fruit is more likely to be more active and affective.

* Lycopene, and tomatoes, apart from being beneficial against cancer are generally active for a host of other health related areas such as the brain and the memory. They also help to reduce hardening of the arteries.
