Hey! Feeling stressed out? Are you tense, stressed
out and ready to "blow your top"? It may be your suffering from hypertension.
If so, losing weight and exercising regularly can lower the blood pressure.
Heart attacks and the risk of strokes can also be reduced by up to 40%. Taking
medication for blood pressure can cause impotency so rather than "pop the
pills" change your lifestyle thus helping to lower blood pressure and the risk
of hypertension. Keeping your BP at 120/80 mmHG lowers the risk of heart
attacks or strokes.
Here are some pointers to help reduce stress
- Start the day well:
Eating melon and yoghurt, which are high in potassium, helps control blood
pressure. Having an intake of 2000 mg of potassium a day can reduce blood
pressure by up to four points in five weeks.
- Reduce the
caffeine: drinking coffee raises Blood pressure. Cut it out or restrict your
intake to one cup a day.
- Vitamin C is good
for you: Drink more orange juice to help reduce blood pressure. Try eating
broccoli, peppers or citrus fruits; these are full of Vitamin C
- Keep calm,
especially in the mornings: Men have a greater chance of having an heart attack
in the morning. This usually relates to the elevated state of their blood
pressure. Avoid morning meetings where you will be under pressure.
- Noise can be
stressful: Working in a noisy factory can raise the blood pressure. So "shut
that door" if you can or take short breaks somewhere quiet.
- Get some sunshine:
The ultraviolet B (Uvb) rays of sunlight helps create a chemical reaction
within the body thus controlling blood pressure.
- Snack Healthily:
Taking magnesium on a daily basis may help relaxation. Eating almonds, dried
pumpkin seeds, halibut, wheat germ, spinach and certain types of fortified
cereals are good sources of magnesium.
- Reduce sodium
(salt): Intake no more than 2400 mg per day; so cut out the gherkins!
- Keep your cool;
Walk away: Try to avoid jobs that are stressful. Difficult, we know, in these
busy times but don't try to please too many people at any one time.
- Keep Dracula at
bay: Garlic is good for you, as it helps maintain the correct level of enzyme's
that prevent hypertension. Garlic capsules are just as good as the real thing.
- Go for brown or
wholemeal bread: Processed wheat causes surges in your insulin level leading to
raised blood pressure. Nice as it is cut down on the white bread.
- Drink milk: Calcium
is important. Ice cream can provide you with up to 200mg of calcium, which
seems to help keep the artery walls flexible.
- Love your fish: Or
at least enjoy eating it. Protein and Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish such as
salmon are strong aids in reducing blood pressure. You might find yourself
losing those extra pounds as well.
- Don't argue: Let
the 'other half' win. Having a row can cause the blood pressure to rise
drastically. The easiest way out is to let your partner do the screaming and
yelling whilst you stay calm, cool and collected.
- Finally take it
easy and do nothing: Make sure you take time out for You. Meditate, relax in a
warm bath and listen to soothing music. You need at least 20 minutes a day
doing nothing at all.
