Music to your ears
Everyone knows that listening to favourite songs can be very relaxing, washing away the stress of a long day. But music can also be of great help during exercise, increasing enjoyment and motivation. This is why you'll hear it at most exercise classes. Playing music when you are exercising at home will provide similar benefits. So what music should you play when exercising at home? This, of course, is largely a matter of personal preference. In general, though, upbeat music is best. If you can find music which matches the rhythm of your exercise movements, so much the better. Lyrics should also influence your choice - some people will be particularly inspired by the lyrics of Status Quo, others by Eminem.

However, the health benefits of music are not confined to stress-reduction and the increased fitness gained from exercising to inspirational tunes; music can go even deeper than this. The first English book on the subject of music and health - Medicina Musica - dates back to the early 1700s, yet the link goes back much farther, at least as far as the ancient tribes who carried out musical ceremonies when one of their number fell ill. Under the watchful eye of a qualified music therapist, music can, for example, be good news for self-esteem and many health problems, such as addictions and eating disorders. If you would like to investigate this avenue further, contact the Association of Professional Music Therapists - www.apmt.org - who will help you find a qualified music therapist suited to your requirements.
