Mind Over Matter

It's been preached for many years the importance of positive thinking when it comes to fighting illness.

Recent research has led doctors into prescribing meditation as well as the more traditional therapies. It is believed there is a connection between positive thinking and good health, but this is old news, as top class athletes have always used meditation and deep breathing exercises to improve confidence, concentration and help heal injuries quicker.
It doesn't matter if you're fighting illness or just trying to get through the week, boosting your immune system and reducing stress will help you cope with everything life as to throw at you.
Staying happy and healthy is important.

Here we suggest some ways you can relieve tension thereby improving your mental and physical outlook:

Start a Diary: A University of Texas Psychology Professor, who carried out research, has come to the conclusion that writing about the way you feel relieves tension. Recording the negative feelings, anxieties and fears means, he says, less visits to the Doctor, compared to those who don't keep a record. You need to spend about 15-20 minutes, three times a week exploring and recording your deepest emotions and thoughts about issues important to you.

Start a Class: Take up Yoga or Tai Chi. Both these blend meditation with physical activity and are suitable for all ages. For help with respiratory rate, lowering of blood pressure and improvement of concentration flexibility and sleep try Yoga. To reduce stress and depression and boost self-confidence take up Tai Chi. Which ever you choose both will boost your feeling of well-being.

Set a Goal: Don't just think about what you want to do or achieve, make it a goal. Make a list of aims, covering each of the specific areas of your life, family, work and hobbies. Set goals but don't make them impossible and , as you achieve each one, reward yourself.

Socialise: Being on your own can be very depressing, meet people, join a club or gym. Make new acquaintances, keep in touch with old friends and go out more, if only to visit family and friends. Talking stimulates the mind.

Massage: One of the most ideal ways of relieving tension and stress is to have a massage. There are many different methods to choose from that release tension and promote relaxation.

Giving a Helping Hand: A survey conducted by the New York State Psychiatric Institute has found that when we help others, we help ourselves. We benefit from the feeling of having done something useful when we volunteer to help out.

Music: According to recent research music gives us a lift in life, as long as it's the right kind. From smooth jazz to baroque chamber, music increases our sense of well being. So turn the radio on for the music and off for the news, as this can only produce a sense of helpfulness and hopelessness.
