Southampton University researchers are running one of the largest studies of its kind into the effect of vitamin D on bones. Previous research has shown that older people who have higher levels of Vitamin D are less at risk of losing their balance and suffering falls that can lead to disabling fractures. Lower levels of Vitamin D in the elderly can be caused by poor diet and the lack of sunlight. This in turn can inhibit the tale-up of calcium an essential for healthy bones.
With almost 10,000 pensioners recruited to take part in the new study doctors plan to inject them with Vitamin D in an effort to stop falls and breaking bones. If the trials are successful the we could find that older people will be given Vitamin D injections each winter in a similar way as they are offered the flu jab. (02/2001)
