POWERbreathe® uses a technique known as resistance training, in much the same way as you might use weights to increase the strength of your arm muscles.
Human performance Scientists have discovered that a major cause of the sensation of breathlessness is weakness of the muscles we use to breathe – the diaphragm and the muscles that expand the chest to draw in breath.
They have shown that people who exercise and strengthen these muscles, known as the inspiratory muscles, tend to feel less breathless and find they are able to carry out activities which previously left them gasping for breath.
This, of course, is why so many people tend to feel more breathless as they get older – because they are generally less active, their inspiratory muscles are not exercised and so they grow weaker.
There have been a wide range of benefits reported in a number of medical conditions, including chronic obstructive lung disease (emphysema and bronchitis), asthma and cystic fibrosis. Inspriatory muscle training has improved inspiratory muscle function for patients with spinal cord injury, neuromuscular disease (including MS, Muscular Dystrophy and strokes), and heart-lung transplant patients.
POWERbreathe® can help anyone who wishes to be less breathless, to make their exercise feel easier, or to improve their performance.
Not all POWERbreathe® trainers are equal and so they come in three types:
Wellness Lung Exerciser for anyone who breathes
Fitness Inspiratory Muscle Trainer for anyone interested in fitness
Sports Performance Inspiratory Muscle Trainer to boost athletic performance
