10 Healthy Snacks to Keep You Going Strong

6th Sep 19

Snacking often gets a lot of bad press for being an unhealthy way to mess up your diet and eat foods that you probably shouldn’t. However, what people don’t often think of is that there are such things as healthy snacks, and they are an awesome way to get you through the day without worrying about giving in to less healthy temptations. They can even be a really smart tactical move to help you get nutrients that you aren’t getting elsewhere for whatever reason, so don’t write them off just yet.

Choosing which snacks that you are going to let yourself have throughout the day, though, may not be so easy to judge. Usually, people think of junk food like biscuits or crisps when the word snack comes to mind, but to do it healthily, you need to be clued up. Here are 10 of the healthiest snacks we like at Exercise.co.uk.

Smoothies

First up, we have smoothies. They’re famously popular for a reason, after all. As long as you buy the right one, you’re set up for an impressive number of your recommended 5-a-day. Plus, you’ll get a huge variety of vitamins and minerals to help you through the day, promoting an even wider range of health benefits (just make sure you avoid added sugar)!

Fruits

Although we’re in the same class as smoothies here, really, only some fruits are really okay to put into our list of regular healthy snacks. Fruits like bananas, apples and oranges are up there with the best of them. You do need to note that it’s easy to get too much sugar in fruits like these though. Choose your selection carefully and depending on what you need from them.

Pumpkin Seeds

Seeds are the next way to go, and pumpkin seeds, in particular, are up there with the best of them. They’re gloriously high in protein (they’re vegan too!) which can be hard to get elsewhere, and they are a good source of fibre! They do offer you some valuable, healthy fats at the same time, which is always a plus as well.

Nuts

Nuts are awesome ways to make sure you’re getting everything you need from your diet. They’re famously high in protein which is always useful, especially for muscle mass, and they have everything else going for them too. They are filling and come in a range of forms too; you’re spoilt for choice, as long as they are as natural as can be anyway.

Hummus

Hummus is full of different things like chickpeas, tahini paste and lemon juices, and it’s again a great source of protein that you might not be getting elsewhere. So not only does it taste incredible, but it also gives you the nutrients you’re missing too; what more could you ask for?

Greek Yoghurt

Greek yoghurt is awesome for having no fat in it, as is usually their selling point, but they are also great for getting calcium and probiotics into your diet to keep your gut healthy! It’s not all just about your heart and your muscles, after all! (and it’s protein-rich as well, like most things on the list! It can’t hurt!)

Guacamole

healthy snacks; a small plate of guacamole

Guacamole is made up of healthy fats, which avocado (the main ingredient) is famous for in tonnes of healthy snack ideas. Healthy fats are essential for your diet as a whole (not to be confused with saturated, which is awful). Healthy fats are really good for helping your recovery after exercise and making sure you’re in the best state you can be.

Corn

Corn is incredibly rich in nutrients and antioxidants in particular. They help keep everything in check, from your immune system to your eye health, and it’s easy to fit into your diet too. Even popcorn (the healthy kind) is a great way to do it in a way that tastes awesome too.

Eggs

Eggs are another one of the big players as an easy source of protein. Maybe not raw like rocky, unless you want salmonella, but in omelettes or even poached/boiled, you’re looking at a great source of natural protein and healthy fats.

Dark Chocolate

We’ll finish off our healthy snacks list with dark chocolate. That’s right; chocolate can be a healthy snack! It’s an acquired taste, don’t get us wrong, but it’s the healthiest variant of chocolate that we can think of. It makes sure that your skin is in good shape, your cholesterol is in the right place, and even that your blood is pressure down. It’s awesome!

That’s just 10 healthy snacks that we managed to come up with, but if you do the leg work and make sure that you have a balanced diet, there’s way more for you to choose from. Even if you have the occasional unhealthy snack, that’s fine too. You need to make sure that you’re enjoying your life, not just making sure it’s healthy.
