What Boxing Equipment Is Essential For Beginners?

There are many gloves, pads, bags and boxing accessories available. But if you’re just starting out on your boxing journey, there are several pieces of equipment that are non-negotiable. These include:

Boxing Gloves

The most important piece of boxing equipment, your boxing gloves, will protect your hands when you repeatedly beat a heavy bag. They should be lightweight, comfortable, durable and a good fit for your hands.

Hand Wraps

Hand wraps further protect the tiny bones in your hands from injury. When wrapped correctly, they will protect your knuckles and wrists from spraining when you throw repeated heavy punches. Hand wraps will also extend the life of your boxing gloves, as they help to absorb any sweat.

Heavy Bag

There are a few different options for heavy punch bags. Look for a bag that weighs 25kg plus, which will prevent the bag from swinging too much when you throw a heavy punch. Your heavy bag should be made to stand the test of time, constructed for durability and shock absorbency.

Skipping Rope

A skipping rope is one of the most effective tools for a boxer, improving balance, coordination, rhythm and stamina. You’ll also learn to be lighter on your feet and keep your weight on the balls of your feet, which helps you to move faster and throw more impactful punches.

What Boxing Equipment Is Optional?

For more experienced boxers and those who are keen to delve further into their training, there are some additional pieces of equipment that will maximise your training. These include:

Focus Pads

If you are planning to train in pairs, focus pads are a great addition to your boxing workout. Pads will help you to improve accuracy, timing and speed, as well as make for an even better cardiovascular workout.

Speed Bag

A speed bag is another great way to develop your speed and reflexes. Make sure you look for a high-quality bag that’s durable and properly shaped, and balanced for accurate rebounds.

Headgear

If you’re taking your boxing training a step further into sparring, it is vital that you wear headgear. This will protect you from scrapes and scratches, as well as alleviate some of the blow if you’re hit on the head. Of course, it’s worth remembering that concussions and head injuries can still occur when you wear headgear, especially if you’re receiving repeated hits.

Mouth Guard

A mouthguard is also essential for sparring, protecting your teeth from being knocked out, your gums from being bruised, and your lips from being split. Choose a high-quality mouthguard that fits more comfortably and will last longer.

How do I clean my equipment?

One of the best ways to extend the lifespan of your boxing equipment is to clean it regularly. This will prevent the build-up of bacteria and nasty smells.

Don’t fall into the trap of putting your gloves in the washing machine – they’re not machine washable! Instead, use a cloth to soak up any excess moisture, then sanitise with a sanitiser spray or a vinegar and water solution. You should then leave them to air dry. After each session, leave your gloves out to air – this will stop bacteria from growing as fast as they would if they were fastened in a bag.

Take the same approach when cleaning punch bags, pads and headgear, wiping with a clean cloth to absorb any moisture and then sanitising.

Your hand wraps are likely machine washable. Pop them in a laundry bag before putting them in your washing machine, which will help to protect the fabric. Leave your hand wraps to air dry.

Finally, if you are using a mouth guard, clean it after use with a specific mouth guard cleaner or soap and water. Never leave your mouthguard in a bag with dirty workout gear – instead, store it in a ventilated case.
