Eco-Friendly Yoga Guide

18th Dec 20

Yoga has become increasingly popular over recent years. It is a great way to de-stress, deal with anxiety, or just become more flexible. When it comes to picking your equipment, there are so many options, but have you ever considered that yoga equipment might not be good for the environment?

As they are items that have a long life, they are not particularly items that cause a lot of damage to the environment. The damage is mostly caused by the process of making them and what they are made from. However, you can buy equipment that is made from eco-friendly materials. This means that you help the environment whilst still getting a high-quality piece of kit.

Yoga Mats

Yoga mats are generally made from materials such a PVC, which is one of the most dangerous plastics for the environment. However, when shopping for your yoga mat, you need to make sure you get something that can support you and keep you safe whilst practising.

One good option for the environment is a cork yoga mat. Cork is a sustainable, naturally cushioned material. It is also antimicrobial so that it can handle your sweat whilst repelling germs and odours. Cork yoga mats are all of this, whilst still being durable, lightweight and safe to use.

Yoga Blocks

It’s not just yoga mats that can be eco-friendly though. There is also a great range of eco-friendly yoga blocks. Similar to the mats, cork is a great option to provide high quality as well as protecting the environment.

If you aren’t sure what yoga blocks are, we’ve got you covered. Mostly, they are used to help you increase your reach and flexibility, whilst also supporting your body during those more difficult poses. They also offer height and support where you need it the most.

Accessories: Water Bottles

When it comes to yoga or any kind of exercise, it is important to stay hydrated. As a result, water bottles are a vital piece of equipment. Plastic bottles, whilst they can be re-used, tend to cause more environmental damage than you would expect. In the UK, more than 16m are put into landfills, burnt or leak into the environment and oceans each day.

A good eco-friendly option would be to use a stainless steel bottle. This is because stainless steel lasts longer and is 100% recyclable, whilst also being non-toxic and BPA-free. Whilst they may be more expensive than reusing the plastic one you got from the shop, in the long run, they will last much longer and still be better for the environment when you come to replace it.
