There are two key types of barbells which are designed to fit two types of weight plates: Standard and Olympic. Standard barbells have a diameter of 1” and Olympic barbells have a 2” hole. Generally, a standard barbell is suitable for a beginner to an intermediate level lifter, whereas an Olympic barbell is more appropriate for an experienced lifter who wants to lift weights regularly.
